Two-Year Rent Demand in Uyo: A Growing Burden on Tenants

Landlords demanding two years’ rent upfront is gradually becoming the norm in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Even amidst the current economic hardship, many landlords seem unbothered about tenants’ struggles, focusing solely on their own financial gain.

Requiring two years’ rent at once doesn’t just double the housing cost — it automatically doubles the agent fees, legal fees, and other charges making rent unaffordable and inaccessible for many residents within the state

This practice is unfair, exploitative, and worsening the housing crisis in the state. Sadly, many agents support it because it enriches them through higher commissions.

No one seems to be speaking up about this, except IKOMENTS, the true mouthpiece of the people.

We call on the Akwa Ibom State Government, especially the Ministry of Lands and Housing and relevant housing authorities, to regulate rent prices and duration. It’s time to protect the public and make housing fair and affordable for all.
