Shock in NPFL: Barau FC Player Attacked, Katsina United Fans Slit Player’s Throat For Equalising Goal In NPFL Match

A violent scene unfolded in Katsina on Saturday during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash between Katsina United and Barau Football Club, leaving football fans across Nigeria and Ghana horrified and demanding justice.

The game, which was supposed to be a thrilling league encounter, turned into a national talking point after reports emerged that Barau FC midfielder, Nana Kwame Abraham, was attacked and had his throat slit by irate home fans following his 69th-minute equaliser.

According to multiple reports from Sahara Reporters, Modern Ghana, and The Heritage Times, the Ghanaian-born midfielder levelled the scoreline 1-1, sparking jubilation among Barau FC players and supporters. Moments later, sections of Katsina United fans allegedly invaded the pitch, attacking Abraham and other players in protest of the equaliser.

Eyewitnesses claim the player sustained a deep cut to his neck, with circulating photos showing him bleeding from the throat area. Barau FC confirmed the disruption in a post on their official X (Twitter) account:

“70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

The match was briefly halted before resuming and eventually ended in a 1-1 draw.

Conflicting Reports and Official Silence

However, not all accounts agree on the extent of the player’s injuries. A referee source cited by THISDAY Live stated that no throat was slit, suggesting that the injury might have been caused by a collision as players and officials ran for safety.

As of press time, neither the NPFL Management Committee nor Katsina United have released an official statement addressing the violent incident, leaving room for speculation and public outrage.

This uncertainty has divided opinions online: while some insist the incident was an attempted murder and demand a life ban for Katsina United, others caution against spreading unverified claims until medical and police reports are released.

The Player’s Condition

Barau FC sources say Nana Kwame Abraham is receiving treatment and is out of danger, though details of his medical condition remain sketchy. The Ghanaian Football community has also expressed concern, calling for a full investigation and better protection for African players competing in the Nigerian league.

A Pattern of Violence in Nigerian Football

Saturday’s incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of fan violence in Nigerian football. The NPFL has struggled with crowd control, poor security arrangements, and inadequate punishment for violent conduct problems that have haunted the league for years.

The attack has once again intensified public concern over fan violence and poor security management in Nigerian football stadiums. Many Nigerians are now demanding swift disciplinary action against both the perpetrators and the management of Katsina United.

This disturbing incident comes barely a month after a similar outbreak of violence was reported in Kano, during a Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 8 fixture at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

it was said Chaos erupted shortly after Shooting Stars (3SC) of Ibadan scored a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 against Kano Pillars. Furious home supporters invaded the pitch, assaulting the referee, match officials, and several 3SC players. Security personnel were forced to fire teargas to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Following the incident, the NPFL imposed heavy sanctions on Kano Pillars, including a ₦9.5 million fine, deduction of three points and three goals, and the indefinite closure of the Sani Abacha Stadium to fans.

Social media reactions under the hashtag #JusticeForNanaAbraham show widespread anger, with many Nigerians describing the event as a “national disgrace.” Calls are mounting for the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and security agencies to ensure accountability and protect players from future harm.

This tragedy exposes deeper cracks within Nigerian sports management — from poor security planning to the lack of accountability when violence erupts. It also mirrors wider societal frustrations spilling into stadiums, where emotions often replace discipline.

If confirmed, this would mark one of the darkest moments in NPFL history — not just for the blood spilled, but for what it says about how lightly we treat human life in the name of football rivalry.

For now, fans await clarity — and justice — for Nana Kwame Abraham.
