Youths in Ikom-Obudu Road Block Highway, Issue Ultimatum to Government Over Neglected Infrastructure
Tensions escalated in Cross River State as youths from communities along the Ikom-Obudu axis blocked a major roadway in protest over what they described as prolonged government neglect.
The protesters reportedly issued a stern warning to state authorities, declaring that if the road is not urgently reconstructed, they will shut down all forms of government activity in the area.
“We told the Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Works. If they fail to construct this road, there will be no school, police checkpoint, revenue collection and election here,” one youth leader was quoted as saying during the blockade.
The demonstrators accused the government of repeated promises without tangible action, citing the deteriorating condition of the Ikom-Obudu road as a major threat to economic activity, education, security operations, and daily transportation.
Residents say the road serves as a critical link for commerce and inter-community movement, and its current state has reportedly disrupted farming, trade, and access to essential services.
As of press time, state authorities had not issued an official response to the ultimatum. Observers warn that prolonged infrastructure neglect could deepen tensions and disrupt governance in the affected areas.
The situation remains tense as negotiations are anticipated.
