BREAKING: Boko Haram Terrorists Attack Military Base in Borno, Army Major Killed
Maiduguri, Borno State — March 1, 2026
Suspected terrorists linked to Boko Haram have attacked a military base in Borno State, killing an Army Major and several other soldiers in a coordinated assault.
According to early security reports, the insurgents stormed a Forward Operating Base near Banki Junction in the early hours of Sunday, launching a heavy gun attack on troops stationed in the area.
⚔️ Casualties Confirmed
Sources confirm that Army Major U.I. Mairiga was among those killed during the attack. Several other soldiers also lost their lives, while some personnel reportedly sustained injuries.
The bodies of the fallen officers are said to have been evacuated to the 7 Division Military Hospital in Maiduguri.
π₯ Coordinated Assault
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers arrived in large numbers, overpowering the base in a surprise raid that lasted for several hours.
Heavy gunfire was reported during the confrontation, with security forces attempting to repel the assault.
The attack is believed to be part of the ongoing insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East region, where Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have continued to target military formations and civilian communities.
π³π¬ Renewed Security Concerns
This latest attack raises renewed concerns about the security situation in Borno and surrounding states.
Despite years of military operations aimed at dismantling insurgent networks, sporadic attacks on military bases and rural communities continue to occur.
Security analysts warn that such assaults are often aimed at:
-
Seizing military weapons and equipment
-
Undermining troop morale
-
Demonstrating continued operational capacity
π️ Nation in Mourning
Military sources said the terrorists used explosives and heavy gunfire. Apart from the dead bodies recovered, many other soldiers were seriously injured, while a yet-to-be-ascertained number of personnel are also still missing.
Since the death of JAS leader Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has been consolidating its grip in locations around Lake Chad. The sect's membership has swollen with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters under Shekau.
The loss of military personnel underscores the ongoing sacrifices made by Nigerian troops in the fight against terrorism.
Further details are expected as military authorities release official statements.
This is a developing story.
