WATCH: ISWAP Releases Video Of Simultaneous Attacks On Four Nigerian Army Camps; Soldiers Reportedly Killed, Weapons Looted
A new video released by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) appears to show coordinated assaults on multiple Nigerian military positions in northeastern Nigeria, with militants claiming significant casualties among troops and the capture of military equipment.
According to reports circulating online, the footage allegedly documents simultaneous attacks on four Nigerian Army camps in Borno State, one of the epicenters of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency. The attacks are believed to have taken place on March 5, with heavily armed fighters storming the military bases in coordinated operations.
The video, which has been widely shared on extremist monitoring platforms, reportedly shows convoys of gun trucks, fighters advancing on the camps, and scenes of heavy gunfire and explosions. In the footage, militants claim that several Nigerian soldiers were killed during the raids while weapons, ammunition, and military vehicles were seized.
While the exact number of casualties has not been independently verified, analysts note that insurgent groups frequently target forward operating bases in the region to capture arms and weaken military presence.
The attacks are attributed to the Islamic State West Africa Province, a faction that split from Boko Haram and pledged allegiance to the global Islamic State. The group remains active across northeastern Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, as well as parts of the Lake Chad Basin.
Over the years, militants linked to the insurgency have repeatedly launched surprise assaults on military installations, often attempting to overrun bases and capture weapons to reinforce their ranks.
Nigeria’s military has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the claims contained in the video. In previous incidents, however, authorities have often described such footage as propaganda intended to exaggerate militant successes and undermine troop morale.
The insurgency in northeastern Nigeria has persisted for more than a decade, leading to thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of civilians across the region.
Security experts warn that the continued ability of insurgent groups to launch coordinated attacks on military facilities highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria’s counterinsurgency operations in the northeast.
